“A Place of Wonder and Tranquility
The Wetlands are a hidden treasure of the Camp Mikell facilities. While hundreds of people visit ever season, it is just far enough off the beaten path to be calm and still. It is this quality that draws so many to the Wetlands, and for those patient enough, the Wetlands come alive with activity. With the many species of turtle, fish, bird and mammal that call this place home, the boardwalk provides a front row seat to some of the best that nature has to offer. However, after so many years of sun and rain, snow and ice, the boardwalk that provides access to this sacred place is beginning to falter. In some areas sun rot is beginning to take its toll, while in others, years of pollen, mud and wear have made the boards dangerously slick. It is for these reasons that we are trying to preserve this unique feature of camp.
The Project
In order to try and preserve this great feature of camp, Blue Ridge Outdoor Education Center has undertaken the project of replacing all of the boards on the boardwalk. After having been turned down for several grants, the Save the Wetlands Boardwalk campaign was started at Guest Camp of 2008. Our goal is to replace the boards, one at a time, until the whole boardwalk is replaced. With over 700 boards that need to be replaced, this is quite the undertaking.
How You Can Contribute
Buy a board! With the donor form on the Camp Mikell website, you can directly help preserve this wonderful area of camp. There are three different sizes of boards, starting at $10. Your tax-deductible donation goes towards the purchase of the board, the required hardware and the cost of installation. Each board purchased can be personalized to commemorate a trip to Mikell, a loved one, or a milestone. Additionally, you’ll receive an emailed picture of your board once installed and a letter for tax deduction purposes.”
